The Sumner School District invites parents of students in grades 4 to 12 to Prevention Curriculum Review Night, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Nov. 14 at the Sumner High School Library Resource Center.
Health and human development materials will be available for guardians. Grades 4 and 5 will be provided health and human development materials, while grades 6 through 12 will have access to an HIV/STD (sexually transmitted diseases) prevention curriculum.
“This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content at each grade level, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom,” said a press release issued by the district.
The district utilizes the KNOW Curriculum, a program developed by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to provide sexual health education.
More than 1 million individuals in the U.S. live with HIV and one in five are unaware of their infection, according to aid.gov. Additionally, Washington state has reported an increase of 34 percent in gonorrhea incidences in the last year, according to the Department of Health.
Prevention education can help teens and young adults understand and avoid the risk of exposure.
Parents who want their children from the HIV/STD curriculum are required to preview the materials beforehand and sign a form stating so.
