The Washington State Patrol (WSP) will step up patrols on the roadways this weekend in an effort to eliminate DUI related collisions. Troopers will be looking for unsafe motorists, with an emphasis on impaired drivers.

The WSP will be deploying additional troopers in Southwest Washington this weekend. The additional troopers will partner with county and city law enforcement agencies to remove impaired drivers from our roadways in an effort achieve Target Zero. Target Zero is part of Washington’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan, aimed to reduce serious injury and all traffic fatalities by 2030.

Be responsible and choose an alternative before getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking. Some good alternatives might be designating a sober driver, taking a taxi, calling a sober friend to drive or staying put until you are completely sober. It only takes a few minutes to make a responsible decision that may prevent a tragedy that will result in life-lasting impacts.

It is important to remember, in Washington State, impaired driving is defined as:

– Driving while impaired by alcohol

– Driving under the influence of any drug, including marijuana

– Driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or above
