Police in Bonney Lake were called to a road rage incident when the two parties involved brandished firearms at each other.
Officers on the afternoon of Oct. 27 were dispatched to the area of the Jack in Box after personnel from East Pierce Fire and Rescue and other witnesses called to report seeing one driver pull a weapon on another motorist.
According to the police report, a witness saw a black car and a green SUV pull up next to each other and begin yelling and screaming at one another. When police arrived, the driver of the SUV told the officer that the other driver threatened him with a shotgun before driving off.
According to the driver of the SUV, he was preparing to turn from 208th Avenue East on to westbound state Route 410 and saw the car on the other side of the intersection. The car was not moving so he turned onto the highway.
At the point, according to the report, after he made the turn, the car pulled in behind him and then pulled along side, with the driver “staring angrily” at him. The driver of the SUV then rolled down his window and “asked the driver what his problem was.”
At that time, the driver of the car allegedly yelled profanities and threatened to assault the driver of the SUV.
The driver of the SUV told the suspect to leave him alone and continued on his way at which point, according to the SUV-driver, the car-driver pulled in next to him at a turn lane and continued yelling and threatening him.
The driver o the SUV said he began to fear for for his safety and the driver of the car got out of his vehicle and began walking toward the SUV, holding up traffic as he did.
At that time, the driver of the SUV pulled his semi-automatic pistol and loaded it. As the driver of the car approached, he was waving his arms and screaming and the driver of the SUV raised his pistol into view, though he did not point it at the other driver, according to the report.
The driver of the car backed away from the SUV and then reached into his car and lifted a red blanket off of a shotgun and stated “I have a gun too.”
At that time the light turned green and the driver of the SUV turned into the Office Depot parking lot and parked in front of the Subway.
The driver of the car followed and pulled up behind him. He exited his car and, according to the driver of the SUV, held up a shotgun shell and said “This could have blown you in half.”
The driver of the SUV said he did not want to fight and pleaded with the other driver to leave.
A pair of witnesses confirmed that the driver of the car was threatening the driver of the SUV, who police reported was “extremely shook up,” but said they did not see a weapon in the suspect’s car.
Police took descriptions of the vehicle and the driver and vehicle and a records check revealed multiple contacts in both Bonney Lake and Puyallup with the suspect vehicle.
Police are investigating.
