East Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to a residential fire at the 19600 block of 94th Street East at 9:30 a.m. Friday. According to East Pierce Battalion Chief Zane Gibson, smoke was coming from the roof and bedroom window of the single-story duplex when the firefighters arrived. No one was home in either unit at the time of the fire.
“The fire was contained to the bedroom, although the rest of the unit sustained significant smoke and heat damage,” Gibson said. There was no damage to the adjoining unit.
The fire was first reported by a housekeeper. As she arrived, she saw the smoke and called 9-1-1. According to her, the residents had just moved in yesterday.
There were no injuries.
Fire investigators said the cause of the blaze is undetermined. However, they confirmed it started in the bedroom near a wall heater. A preliminary report of damage to the unit is estimated at $80,000 and $90,000.
