Kindergarten registration officially begins February 1, 2016, but families can get a head start by attending one of four district-held Kindergarten Kickoff events.
Parents and caregivers of entering Kindergarten students are invited to an information session to learn about Kindergarten in the Sumner School District. No registration is required. Childcare will not be provided.
January 26: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Sumner School District Central Office
January 26: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Sumner Middle School
January 28: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Sumner School District Central Office
January 28: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Mountain View Middle School
The information session will provide:
– Details about the Kindergarten program
– Information about registration and required forms
– Ways that families and children can be supported during the transition to Kindergarten
– Overview about the Sumner School District and offerings
– Opportunity to communicate with District staff and ask questions
All children enrolling in kindergarten for the 2016-17 School Year must be five years old by August 31, 2016.
When registering a child for school, families should bring: proof of child’s birth date (birth or hospital certificate, passport); immunization information and child’s health history; proof of residency; and names and phone numbers of parents, physician and emergency contact when the parent/guardian cannot be reached.
Research shows early learning is an integral part of student success. Superintendent, Dr. Sara Johnson notes, “Kindergarten is an opportunity to develop and strengthen foundational skills necessary for success in school and lifelong learning.” Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade. All children enrolling in kindergarten will participate in a screening process held later in the spring.
Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information beginning February 1, 2016, or download a packet from the District Website at www.sumnersd.org. Completed registration forms should be returned to the school or the Central Administration Office at 1202 Wood Avenue in downtown Sumner.
