Open enrollment for qualified health insurance plans starts this Saturday, Nov. 15, through the Washington Healthplanfinder, Washington State’s online health insurance marketplace.
To kick off open enrollment in Pierce County, Tacoma-Pierce County Department and community partners will host a Super Saturday at 10 locations throughout Pierce County, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the enrollment events, you can get help with your application or answers to your questions from trained, certified assisters or navigators.
New and returning customers will able to compare 90 health insurance plans from 10 different insurance companies and see if they qualify for free or low-cost health coverage through www.wahealthplanfinder.org. Enrollment in Apple Health, Washington’s Medicaid program, is year-round. New tools are available at www.knowyourplan.org to help educate consumers about common health insurance terms and important information to consider when selecting a health plan.
To secure coverage starting Jan. 1, residents must select and pay for a plan by Dec. 23 at 5 p.m. The enrollment period extends through Feb. 15. Last year, 85 percent of consumers who enrolled through Washington Healthplanfinder qualified for free coverage or subsidies. Those who do not enroll in a health insurance plan in 2015 can be subject to a fine of $325 per individual or up to 2 percent of their income, whichever is greater.
