Local teams experienced mixed success Thursday during the early rounds of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament in Kennewick.

The day was particularly tough on the Enumclaw High Hornets, who parlayed a late-season rally into a state berth. The Hornets opened tournament play with 25-15, 25-11, 25-22 loss to Mount Spokane and were then ousted after losing a tough, five-game match to Kennedy High of Burien.

Things went better for the Sumner Spartans, who entered tournament play as one of the favorites after spending much of the season ranked No. 1 in the state by coaches.

The Spartans slipped early, losing in three straight (25-16, 25-19, 25-23) to Bishop Blanchet, but kept their trophy dreams alive with a victory over Holy Names. Scores from the second match were 25-21, 25-23, 25-15).

Sumner’s next challenge comes at 8 tonight, Thursday, against the winner of the Union/Camas match.

Also participating at state from the South Puget Sound League 3A were Lakes and Auburn Mountainview. Lakes opened play with a five-game victory over Mt. Si and will square off against Shorecrest at 6:30 tonight. Auburn Mountainview lost to Shorecrest and Mt. Si and has been eliminated.
