Princess Lilly Lewis, Warrior Jake Rodrigues and Muckleshoot Skopabsh Princess Olivia Courville will reign over Friday’s 16th annual Enumclaw School District Pow-Wow. Doors to the EHS gymnasium open at 6 p.m. with Grand Entry slated for 7. The free event includes Native American dancing, vendors and food including Indian tacos.
Lewis, Umatilla tribe, and Rodrigues, Muckleshoot, are eighth-grade students at Enumclaw Middle School. Courville is an eighth-grade student at Thunder Mountain Middle School. All three have been dancing for years.
They are among 109 students from 74 families representing 47 tribes, Native American and Alaskan Native, in the Enumclaw School District Native American Program.
During the week leading up to the Pow-Wow, the young dance troupe will be touring the school district’s elementary and middle schools.
Today, Wednesday, Enumclaw High history and photography classes will be treated to a Native Performing Arts Program. An actress in full regalia will be storytelling, while an archival film will play in the background. She will be telling the story of a Navajo family and their experiences with boarding schools and as Code Talkers during World War II.
