With a chilly wind whipping through the White River Amphitheatre it felt more like the beginning of the school year rather than the end, as approximately 333 seniors strode across the stage to accept their diplomas at the 2007 Enumclaw High School commencement exercise Sunday evening.
Senior Class Presidents Isabel Hong and Josh Schipper started the evening with the introduction of the class.
James Mitsuyasu reminded the seniors of the journey to graduation and gave the crowd a glimpse into life through the eyes of a student.
John Person provided the class song “Here's to the Night.”
Jennifer Williams, the first person in her family to graduate, let the crowd know “Why I Am Here.” Hans Nelson entertained and enlightened the crowd with his speech, which followed a “Star Wars” theme, titled “A New Hope.”
The Enumclaw High concert choir performed Robert Frost's “The Road Not Taken.”
Principal David Dorn announced the students' academic honors.
Enumclaw High graduates earned more than $365,000 in scholarships for the coming year and more than $1.5 million through the next four years.
Top 10 honors went to Lindsey Androsko, Justin Clark, Bethany Freeburg, Isabel Hong, Stephanie Johnson, Sara Knudson, Quin Koplitz, Kelsey Laroche, Jonathan Musick and Catherine Zender.
Fourteen students also earned degrees from Green River Community College. They were: Justin Clark, Priscilla Cox, Tyler Dunlap, Patrick Gendron, Molly Goodin, Michael Hudson, Laroche, Emily Millbauer, Samantha Norton, Annalea Osgoodby, Floyd Robbins, Jaimee Robinson, Anna Schofield and Stephany Wieland.
Caitlin Collins and Morgan Vande Voort completed cosmetology courses.
With a few words of inspiration from Superintendent Mike Nelson and a few quotes of Bob Dylan from Enumclaw School Board President Dale Holland, the Class of 2007 picked up their diplomas, turned their tassels and headed off into the sunset and the future.
