Fire causes minor damage for Sumner business

Crews from East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to a fire just after 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at Pasquier Panel, 1510 Puyallup St., in Sumner.

A total of 25 firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue, Central Pierce Fire and Rescue and Edgewood Fire Department brought the fire under control.

The fire was contained to a dust hopper connected to processing equipment. Crews spent several hours putting out hot spots between the wood walls of the shed that enclosed the hopper.

“Most likely a spark from a piece of equipment got into the hopper,” East Pierce Deputy Chief John McDonald said. “Eventually it got enough air to ignite the dust.”

Damage was estimated at $10,000. Fire officials said the shed was a total loss.

“Fortunately, no one was working in the immediate area of the fire and no one was injured,” McDonald said.
