Fire district hosts scout night | East Pierce Fire & Rescue

Each year, East Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters facilitate numerous public education requests from scout groups trying to achieve certain badge requirements. In response to the demand and to reach more scouts, East Pierce organized Scout Night, a free event geared specifically toward local scout groups.

In response to the demand and to reach more scouts, East Pierce organized Scout Night, a free event geared specifically toward local scout groups.

East Pierce invites all Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire members to join in the first Scout Night event scheduled for Friday, June 6 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Headquarters Station in Bonney Lake, 18421 Veterans Memorial Drive.

Scout Night is open to scout groups within the East Pierce service area, including Bonney Lake, Sumner, Lake Tapps, Milton, Edgewood, South Prairie, Wilkeson and unincorporated Buckley.

Scouts will rotate through various learning designed to address several badge requirements. Learning stations include:

Home Safety: Identify how to fix or prevent various home hazards; learn the importance of smoke alarms; when to call 911 and what to tell the dispatcher.

Basic First Aid: Learn first aid basics, like how to cool a burn, treating cuts and bloody nose, what to do if someone is choking, and how to treat bee stings and identify signs of allergic reaction.

Home Escape Planning: Scouts will design a home escape plan identifying two ways out of every room, designate a meeting place, crawl low under smoke, and learn when and how to shelter in place.

Emergency Preparedness: Learn why it’s important to have an emergency plan, how to assemble an emergency kit, and the importance of an out of area contact.

Firefighter and Paramedic Tools, Equipment and Careers: Get an up-close look at the bunker gear and equipment firefighters use to stay safe and do their job and ask questions why they chose their career.

Ropes and Knots: Watch firefighters demonstrate various knot tying. Scouts will have an opportunity to practice too.

Attendance is limited and advance registration is required. To secure space, troop leaders can contact Dina Sutherland at 253-863-1800.
