Fireworks: Know the laws

Residents of Sumner may celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks until Tuesday, provided they do so within specific hours and on private property. Fireworks are allowed in Sumner during the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. until noon Tuesday as long as they are not detonated in a street or on public property.

In Bonney Lake the hours of lawful fireworks use are the same, but beginning on Saturday. On Sunday, people may light fireworks until midnight, and are allowed on Monday until 11 p.m. again. East Pierce Fire and Rescue encourages revelers to attend public fireworks shows instead of putting on their own displays, but offers a few tips to stay safe while celebrating Independence Day. Here are East Pierce Fire and Rescue’s recommendations:

• Adult supervision when around fireworks and only adults should light fireworks and handle matches and lighters. Keep matches and lighters away from children.

• Speak to children about celebrating safely.

• Use care in selecting the area for discharge of fireworks and the type of fireworks appropriate for that area.

• Use legal fireworks from licensed outlets.

• Store fireworks out of the reach of children.

• Do not throw fireworks or hold in your hand.

• Protect your eyes.

• Light one firework at a time and move away quickly.

• Never relight a “dud.”

• Always keep water handy and never light fireworks indoors.

Soak used fireworks in water and clean up when finished.
