The following is written by Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow:
This Saturday, it’s Come Walk with Me in Sumner. This is a nice, home-grown event that started with a couple of downtown merchants and has grown over the years. Now, it features hundreds of walkers, and that’s very exciting! For me, it’s a great way to support a great cause. You can probably barely see me waving in the sea of pink in the picture from last year.
The event has grown so much that for the first time, this year will follow a new 5K route through downtown Sumner that will hopefully be safer for walkers and easier on drivers using our busier roads. There will be a rolling shut-down of the streets along the route as the bulk of walkers go by. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience and hope that you have some fun with this Sumner tradition. Decorate with pink and cheer walkers on, or better yet, register to walk yourself.
After all, the event may have grown from a handful of energetic enthusiasts to a regional draw of pink, but it’s heart is still the same. The money raised helps keep resources for breast cancer patients local in our area. It’s nice to know those resources are accessible, although we hope to reach a time when no one needs them anymore. Until then, walk on and I’ll see you in pink this weekend!
