A Ravensdale resident recently pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter after a fatal wreck in 2023.
On June 29, 2023, Ryan Christopher Spring was intoxicated while he was driving north on Ravensdale-Black Diamond Road when he crossed the double yellow line.
When he did, Spring sideswiped Thomas Coon, causing him to roll over into a ditch on the east side of the road; Coon was uninjured.
Spring continued driving in the southbound lane and then struck motorcyclists Richard Weaver and Philip Benson before he rolled over, ending back on his vehicle’s wheels.
Benson’s motorcycle was flung into a grassy area on the west side of the road, and his leg was severed.
Weaver and his motorcycle were thrown into a nearby tree.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and Spring was taken to Valley Medical Center for suspected head injuries.
Police found a bottle of vodka in Spring’s car after the crash, and a blood draw showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15.
Spring was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of reckless driving on Feb. 20; he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charges on Feb. 25.
Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 95 months of incarceration and 18 months of community custody.
The standard range of DUI vehicular homicides is 95 months to 125 months.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 18.
