During the March 15 Sumner City Council meeting, Mayor Dave Enslow happily announced the return of Sumner’s hanging basket program.
Sumner suspended the hanging basket program as a cost-saving measure, but it is back by demand.
Enslow said people in Sumner repeatedly asked him whether the baskets would be placed again and it became obvious it was something citizens valued.
“This is a feature of some of the quaintness in Sumner,” he said.
Enslow said the program will not be as extensive as before and includes approximately 30 baskets.
The hanging baskets are being purchased by the Sumner Downtown Association and Enslow said maintenance crews will provide water when they have spare time, so no extra cost is incurred on the city.
When the weather is warmer, baskets will be placed and Enslow said the plants in them require a good amount of care.
“They don’t tolerate a lot. They’re going to need some attention,” he said.
He said it’s asking a lot to put more responsibility on a city with a reduced staff, but it is important nonetheless.
“It was just a matter of sort of prioritizing,” he said.
