A Lake Tapps Boy Scout troop will soon be honored for saving a life last year.
Ten boys and two adults from Boy Scouts of America Troop 501 will be recognized for their role in saving the life of a mountain biker last summer. Two Scouts from Troop 835 who could not be present for their troop’s award ceremony will receive their honors alongside the boys from 501.
Troop 501 will hold their annual Fall Court of Honor at North Tapps Middle School Monday . It will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the troop first handing out awards for summer activities.
“Toward the end of the ceremony, Gary Peterson, our district chairperson, will walk up, call an end to the regional court of honor and open up a National Court of Honor,” Scoutmaster Greg Nieman said. “That’s when the troop members will receive their award.”
Each Scout will be presented with the National Certificate of Merit, an award given to those who have “performed a significant act of service that is deserving of special national recognition.”
In this case, the act of service was the July 2009 rescue of Melinda, who does not want her last name used for privacy reasons. Melinda and boyfriend Rob Covert, both 48, were riding down the last curve of Sun Top Trail near Crystal Mountain when she grazed a tree and flew into a patch of rocks.
She was knocked unconscious and sustained an apparent head wound. Covert rode down the mountain in search of cell phone reception; instead he came across Troops 501 and 835 in the middle of emergency preparedness training. The Scouts immediately applied their training, stabilizing Melinda as 911 was called to the scene.
Melinda and Conroy intend to be present at the Court of Honor, Nieman said.
Troop 501 Scouts receiving the Certificate of Merit Monday are:Bryant Irwin, Cole Lindell, Kyle Isom, Dalton Troseth, Adam McKee, Konrad Stenger, Patrick McFarland, Nathan Quick, John Elliot Chaffee, Jaymes Fleury, Patrick Peet, Assistant Scoutmaster John Irwin and Troop Committee Member Jeff Lindell.
