The Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society is planning a Naches Trail tour for this Saturday morning starting in Buckley.
The Naches Trail, which became the Sumner-Buckley Highway, was once the main route over the mountains, bringing settlers and then the military into Western Washington, then part of the Oregon Territory. Historic markers dot the path today.
During the Puget Sound Indian War, the Naches Trail was the main road for the U.S. military and the area’s first permanent resident, the Kelleys, came across the trail before settling in what is today Bonney Lake.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, the Historical Society will lead a walk down the trail from the Buckley Museum to the Puyallup River.
The walk starts at 9 a.m. at the Foothills Historical Society Museum, 128 River Avenue, Buckley. Organizers hope to make five or six stops at historically interesting points and the tour should finish within four hours.
