Although there seemed to be just as many fireworks as in previous years, it was a relatively quiet Fourth of July for East Pierce Fire and Rescue crews.
That’s not to say the day was accident-free as one woman had to be transported to the hospital for a significant fireworks-related injury.
Firefighters and EMTs responded to a total of 28 fire and medical emergency calls Sunday, including the woman, who was transported to a trauma center around 5 p.m. Sunday.
According to East Pierce officials, she will likely lose a few fingers.
According to East Pierce Assistant Chief Ed Goodlet there were no structure fires and just a few grass fires.
“The weather conditions played in our favor this year,” he said.
Last year hot, dry weather leading up to the holiday weekend resulted in approximately 35 emergency calls – almost double the department’s typical daily call volume. Approximately half of those calls were for fires, the other half were medical emergencies. Of the fires, most were grass or brush fires. One family lost their home in a fireworks-related house fire last year.
