Jessica Kennett was named first America's Junior Miss March 30 during a program at the White River School District annex auditorium in Buckley.

Judges selected Kennett from the four White River High School juniors who participated. The young ladies were judged on interview, talent, scholastics, self-expression and fitness. Judges were from outside the area.

America's Junior Miss is a scholarship program that promotes education and excellence in all areas of life. As such, Kennett received $800 in scholarship money and will now compete for the Washington's Junior Miss title and the opportunity to represent the state at the 51st AJM National Finals in Mobile, Ala., June 26, 27, and 28. The young woman who is selected as national Junior Miss will earn more scholarships.

In 2007, America's Junior Miss celebrated its 50th anniversary with representatives from all 50 states and the winner received more than $50,000 in scholarships.

The other Buckley contestants were also winners. Taylor Stewart-Streitz won the spirit award and a $100 in scholarship money. Morgan Papenbrock and Angela Simmons each received $200 each.
