Caleb Thorsteinson, 3, received a leukemia diagnosis two years ago and after an outpouring of support, is helping to make Christmas brighter for other children facing health concerns.
After two fundraisers inspired by the Lake Tapps boy, he thought it would be best to organize a toy drive for kids at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.
Family friend Lori Longthorne participated in these fundraisers, including the Leukemia Climb at the former Columbia Tower, now the Bank of America building, in Seattle. In the event, participants climb to the top of the towering building.
“We formed a team called Climbing for Caleb and 300 people participated, raising $10,000,” Longthorne said.
Another fundraiser included goldfish races at Captain Jack’s bar in Sumner. Longthorne said the climb raised money for leukemia research and the money from the goldfish races went to Caleb and his family to pay for treatment.
Longthorne said people were looking to continue raising funds for the family.
“Everbody’s kind of come together in the area and said‚ ‘What else can we do for the family?’” Longthorne said.
A series of toy drives will take place in the Sumner and Bonney Lake area through Friday. A collection at Captain Jack’s on Friday brought in several toys.
Toys, games, DVDs and gift cards may be brought to any of the following locations:
