Liberty Ridge Elementary School Principal Margie Bellmer announced Wednesday that she was leaving her position in order to seek immediate treatment for a cancer diagnosis.
Bellmer made the announcement in a letter sent home with students. Her last day will be May 25.
“Not only does this mean an early retirement, but it also means I will be leaving what I consider one of the most important jobs one can do, educating children,” she wrote.
Bellmer said she decided to leave on the advice of her doctor.
According to District Spokesperson Ann Cook, Bellmer has been with the district since 2005. She was originally hired as an assistant principal at Sumner Middle School and is presently in her second year as principal at Liberty Ridge.
Cook called the announcement “unexpected” and “very sudden” but said the district leadership team supports her decision and that of her doctor.
“It’s very sad to see her go,” Cook said. “If it weren’t for the health issue she probably would not be seeking an early retirement.”
Cook said a replacement principal would be announced Friday. Cook said the replacement is an in-district choice that would take over for the remainder of this year and at least next school year as well.
The text of Bellmer’s letter to parents is below:
Dear Liberty Ridge Families:
Today I visited classrooms and spoke with students to let them know I will be going on a medical leave beginning May 26, and will retire from the school district. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and doctors are recommending I begin treatment immediately. Not only does this mean an early retirement, but it also means I will be leaving what I consider one of the most important jobs one can do, educating children.
The parents at Liberty Ridge do an amazing job of supporting their children and our school. Our Art Docents, parents who worked during the Fun Run, Fright Night, the Book Fairs, the twenty people that came in on a Saturday to install playground equipment, the many parents who volunteer in classes each week, and those who attend these events are just some examples of the commitment and involvement of our families.
Families will receive more information later this week about plans for a new principal at Liberty Ridge. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me. After working in four school districts I can say with confidence that the staff at Liberty Ridge is outstanding, and the Sumner School District is truly a great place to learn. I will miss seeing the smiling faces of the wonderful children who attend Liberty Ridge. Thank you for your support and kindness over the past three years. It has been a privilege to work with your children.
Sincerely,
Margie Bellmer, Principal
