Enumclaw’s Southwood Elementary School and White River’s Wickersham School of Discovery recently received Great Schools Awards for being among the top 5 percent of Washington schools when it comes to improved scores in reading and mathematics.

The award factored in the past five years and there were 104 schools honored.

The award was formerly known as the State Superintendent’s Schools of Distinction Learning Improvement Award, but sponsorship switched to the Center for Educational Effectiveness and Phi Delta Kappa and the name was changed to Great Schools Award.

John Armenia from the Center for Educational Effectiveness presented Southwood Elementary School Principal Susan Arbury with a certificate and banner at the Enumclaw School Board’s regular meeting Oct. 19. This is the second straight year Southwood has earned the award.

Wickersham School of Discovery was closed following the last school year, with students and staff assigned to other district schools.
