A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a freight train at the Thompson Street overpass in Sumner early Monday morning.

A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a freight train at the Thompson Street overpass in Sumner early Monday morning.

According to a press release from the Sumner Police Deartment, an unidentified white male was struck and killed by a northbound train while sitting on Burlington Norther Sana Fe Railway tracks in Sumner. The acident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Zane Gibson said the man was declared dead at the scene.

It is unknown at this time why the man was sitting on the tracks and Sumner police are investigating.

In an unrelated incident, East Pierce crews at 2:30 a.m. responded to a reported car in a ditch to find two cars that had been involved in a head-on collision at the 3900 block of West Tapps Drive East. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
