Man shot, killed following home invasion near Buckley

A random intruder was shot and killed Monday night after attacking a homeowner armed with a handgun.

NOTE: the following was provided by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department in response to the fatal shooting late Monday in a rural area between Buckley and South Prairie.

On 11/18/2013 at 11 p.m. deputies responded to 25713 164th St E for a reported shooting.  Upon arrival it appeared that the subject who was shot, and was confirmed dead at the scene, forced entry into the residence after driving a vehicle through the gate to enter the property. The suspect hit parked cars that were in the driveway. The suspect started screaming and breaking windows out of the residence. The 67 year old home owner armed himself with a gun while he wife called 911 The suspect who was 21 years old kicked the door in chased the home owner and began punching him multiple times, The home owner fired shots hitting the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.

The homeowner and suspect did not know each other and no words were exchanged during the fight. It appears per witnesses that the car left the roadway at a high rate of speed and crashed through the gate and it was random. The 67 year old victim was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and concern over previous heart issues. The suspect reeked of marijuana. Will have to wait for tox to determine if he had other substances in his system.
