Students can get a jump-start on their education by attending the third annual Math Camp, offered during August at the Buckley Youth Activity Center.

Subjects include multiplication memorization, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus. All materials are provided.

Math Camp is taught by Bob Howie and Mark Thompson, six-year veterans of the Village Tutors program. They offer math seminars for children wishing to jump ahead and prepare for school in the fall. The classes run two hours a day for five days, moving at a brisk pace.

There are no tests or graded homework or repetitive, proficiency drills. Instead, students are expected to simply follow and understand the lesson, mentally engaging with the teacher either by asking good questions or by taking good notes.

Parents of incoming college freshmen might want to take note of Math Camp. Many are surprised to discover their young adults have been placed in remedial courses with credits that can’t be applied toward college graduation.

The Math Camp fee is $50, which is refunded if the student receives a grade of B or better on a January report card.

Dates for camp topics are: pre-calculus, Aug. 6-10; algebra 2 and trigonometry, Aug. 13-17; and geometry, Aug. 20-24; algebra 1, Aug. 27-31. Multiplication Memorization has a $10 fee and is offered twice, from Aug. 6-10 and again Aug. 20-24.
