The first session of Village Tutors Math Camp is scheduled to start Monday at the Buckley Youth Activity Center.
The first-year camp concentrates on Algebra 1 and Geometry.
“It’s for kids who really want to get back on track, or good kids who want to be great,” said Bob Howie, who oversees Buckley’s Village Tutor program.
“We’ve seen kids for three years now,” Howie said of the Village Tutors regular nightly program. “We’ve seen kids turn around from tutoring.”
According to Howie, Math Camp is interactive tutoring, not boring lectures. Instructors encourage class participation, good note-taking and problem-solving. Each class is designed to provide individualized attention.
Each session is five days and, although it’s not part of the White River School District program, it follows the same course work.
Head Start is for students who plan to take Algebra 1 or Geometry for the first time in the fall. Tutors will select the most important topics and those which first-time students sometimes find confusing. The goal is to demystify algebra or geometry and introduce students to the subject: the terms and notation, the major theorems and formulas, and some practice working problems so when students encounter the concepts at school they will be familiar and easy.
Again is for students who plan to retake Algebra 1 or Geometry for the second time in the fall. This course will review the more difficult parts of each subject and focus on practicing typical problems that appear in tests. Students will work with the instructor and other students to solve problems. The goal is to overcome negatives created from the first experience and prepare for success in the second opportunity.
Seminars are two hours each morning, Monday through Friday. Algebra 1, both Head Start and Again, are scheduled to begin Monday, continue through Aug. 6 and run again Aug. 9 to Aug. 13. Geometry courses are set for Aug. 16 to Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 to Aug. 27.
The cost is $100 and is limited to 10 qualifying students. Students who get an A in the course in the coming year will receive a refund. Parents are welcome to attend with their student. Call the youth center at 360-829-6534 for details.
