This year, National Arson Awareness Week is May 4 to 10, and focuses on reducing vehicle arson — a combustible crime.

“Many times, seemingly abandoned automobiles are attractive targets for these trouble-making activities,” said State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy. “By raising awareness, we can help combat vehicle arson in our local communities.”

What can you do to prevent vehicle arson?

  • Park your car in a well-lit area.
  • Use a secure parking lot for extended periods.
  • Close all windows.
  • Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Always lock doors, trunk and tailgate.
  • Use antitheft devices.
  • Report abandoned cars to the police.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Use a recovery system, such as a GPS or other tracking device.
