This year, National Arson Awareness Week is May 4 to 10, and focuses on reducing vehicle arson — a combustible crime.
“Many times, seemingly abandoned automobiles are attractive targets for these trouble-making activities,” said State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy. “By raising awareness, we can help combat vehicle arson in our local communities.”
What can you do to prevent vehicle arson?
- Park your car in a well-lit area.
- Use a secure parking lot for extended periods.
- Close all windows.
- Remove the key from the ignition.
- Always lock doors, trunk and tailgate.
- Use antitheft devices.
- Report abandoned cars to the police.
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
- Use a recovery system, such as a GPS or other tracking device.
