Park Service trail maintenance jobs open locally

Applications are due Dec. 23.

For those looking for work in the great outdoors, the local National Park Service has posted a handful of job openings at Mount Rainier National Park, and applications are closing soon.

Multiple trail maintenance positions, including leadership roles, were posted recently and will close at the end of day Thursday, Dec. 23.

There are 60 vacancies for trail maintenance workers, with positions available locally at Carbonado, Enumclaw, Longmire and Packwood. Two additional vacancies for trail leaders are open at those locations.

The Park Service anticipates the jobs, which are seasonal, starting in Spring next year. They’ll involve trail maintenance, construction and repair, such as clearing debris from landslides and wind falls, digging or cleaning culverts, clearing brush, bridge building, masonry, painting and equipment repair.

The Maintenance Worker Leader will also assign work, explain procedures to crew members, plan schedules and provide reports and handle other duties in assisting the Trails Supervisor.

The base worker position has a pay range of $19.91 to $31.04 per hour. The Leader position has a pay range of $29.23 to $34.13 per hour.

These are physical jobs, and applicants should be prepared to lift and carry objects weighting more than 100 pounds, use hammers and power tools and hike up to 20 miles a day. They should also be prepared to live and work in the backcountry in close contact with small groups of people.
