Pavement work at Tacoma Narrows Airport starts July 21 | Pierce County

Work to seal pavement cracks and replace markings at Tacoma Narrows Airport will begin July 21. The airport will remain open during the nighttime work. Crews will seal pavement cracks on the north half of Taxiway A, the connector taxiways, and the north apron. The north apron will also be fog sealed, which will seal narrow cracks, provide a black pavement surface color, and preserve the underlying pavement structure.

The tie down markings will also be replaced.

The work will be done at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize impact to airport users. The crack sealing, fog sealing and initial marking application are expected to take 11 weekday nights. After 28 days to allow the pavement to cure, the final markings will be applied over one night. The pavement in the work areas will be accessible during the curing process.

Pilots will be directed to use alternate routes around the work at night to reach the runway. Some airport tenants will not have access to their hangar while pavement work is done in front of the hanger entrances. A map with scheduled closures is available at www.piercecountywa.org/tacomanarrows.

The contractor for the project is Harlow Construction. The construction cost is approximately $350,000, which also included the replacement of the airport’s North Gate with a 24-foot automated vehicle gate and the installation of a new 20-foot emergency access gate on the west side of the airport at 8th Street Northwest. The gate projects were completed in May.

The project is funded with a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program Grant, an Airport Aid Program Grant from Washington State Department of Transportation Aviation, and Real Estate Excise Taxes.
