An unidentified woman was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center after sustaining serious injuries from a car.

The victim was apparently walking on Sumner-Tapps Highway, near the intersection with Forest Canyon Road East and West Tapps Drive East, when she was struck by the vehicle around 1 p.m., East Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Zane Gibson said. She was several feet from the road when emergency responders arrived. The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene.

Valley Regional Fire Authority also responded.

The Pierce County Sheriff is investigating the circumstances of the accident to determine whether to charge the driver.
