Pierce County has two new award-winning community volunteers.

On Tuesday, March 10, the County Council recognized the special efforts and contributions of the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award, Alan Hughes, and the recipient of the Special Achievement award, Rick Adams. Council Resolution R2015-15 also established the week of March 9-15, 2015, as “Volunteer Recognition Week.”

“Pierce County is very fortunate to have over 4,000 citizens of all ages and backgrounds provide volunteer service to many departments in Pierce County government,” said Scott Hall, Superintendent of Recreation for the Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department, who oversees the volunteer awards. “The dedication, compassion, and caring that Rick and Alan – along with all the volunteers – is greatly appreciated and helps make Pierce County a great place to live.”

Hughes volunteered his time with search and rescue and emergency support operations in Pierce County. Working in several different capacities, he logged in approximately 60,000 hours, with over 2,000 alone in 2014. Adams spent decades generating community support for Ashford County Park. In 2010, crews constructed and dedicated an elaborate playground, restrooms, trails, and parking. Phase II of the 84-acre park will be dedicated in 2015, including additional restrooms, parking and a new amphitheatre.

“It’s an honor to meet these dedicated individuals who clearly care so much for the communities in which they live,” said Council Chair Dan Roach, who represents the 1st Council District in which Hughes resides. “Volunteers truly represent some of the best aspects of Pierce County, and I’m proud of these gentlemen and all those who spend their free time in service to others.”

Councilmember Jim McCune, who represents the 3rd Council District where Adams lives, echoed Roach’s comments by adding his appreciation for their commitment.

“Whether you volunteer for a weekend or for a lifetime, it’s a sacrifice that some people just aren’t willing to make. That’s what makes these two individuals so special,” said McCune. “There’s an old expression that says ‘nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something,’ and I think all of us in Pierce County should look to volunteers like Alan and Rick as examples of how we can make this world a better place.”

Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy will join Roach this Saturday in co-hosting the annual Pierce County Volunteer Recognition Brunch to honor many of those who serve.
