Police catch motorcyclist who leads them on nighttime chase | BONNEY LAKE POLICE BLOTTER

DRUG CHECK: Police on June 8 were dispatched to the 10200 block of 218th Avenue East for a narcotics call from the Department of Corrections. According to the DOC, a resident failed a urine test and he was to be taken into custody by a DOC officer. The Corrections Officer, doing a home inspection, discovered several prescription pills in a baggie in the pocket of a pair of jeans. It is illegal to carry prescription pills in a baggie. He gave police the name of a known drug supplier in the area. The corrections officer found more than 85 message on the suspect’s phone regarding drug transactions. The suspect was secured in the back of the corrections van and returned to Pierce County Jail. Bonney Lake police have requested an additional charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

WAY TOO MUCH TOO: Police on routine patrol early July 2 observed a vehicle make a wide right turn out of a parking lot on to 214th Avenue East and began to follow the vehicle. It drifted between lanes, was traveling at 10 mph below the posted speed limit and had a defective tail light. The officer pulled over the vehicle and upon contact noted the driver was lethargic and sluggish. Her eyes were watery and droopy and her speech was slurred. The driver said she was trying to get the passenger home because he had “Way too much to drink.” After getting out of the car, the driver swayed back and forth and she admitted to having a few drinks. She failed multiple roadside sobriety tests and provided a preliminary breath test of more than three times the legal limit. She was arrested and transported to Buckley Jail for processing on DUI charges.

FOUND SUITCASE: Police on July 3 were dispatched to Walmart for a report of a suitcase found in the parking lot. Police located an expired identification card in the case, which also contained rolls of film and a baby’s photo album. Police check the records on the id card and went to the residence, but neighbors said the resident was evicted. The suitcase was placed into the Bonney Lake Evidence Room as found property.

DRUGS, NEGLECT: Police on July 3 were dispatched to Safeway for a report of a child left in a car.As police arrived, they were flagged down by the reporting party who pointed out a vehicle leaving the lot. Police stopped the vehicle and discovered the driver to have a suspended license. In the car were five children ranging in age from two months to 12 years. The driver seemed confused and was unable to locate insurance information, handing the officer random pieces of paper and receipts.  She said she was trying to get home to Sumner, though was not on a road that led to Sumner. After exiting the vehicle the driver had a difficult time maintaining balance. Police discovered multiple loose prescription pills in the woman’s pocket. She told police she did leave her children in the vehicle with the 12-year-old. The driver’s mother was called to take custody of the children and vehicle. The driver was transported to Pierce County Jail and held on four counts of leaving a child in a parked car, driving with license suspended and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

ELUDING: Police on patrol just after midnight on July 4 saw an off-road motorcycle with no illumination go by.The officer activated his lights and sirens and attempted to turn around to follow the bike, but lost sight of it because of the lack of illumination. The officer again saw the bike on 214th Avenue East crossing Connells Prairie Road East and noted it to be an off-road bike with no plates. The officer continued to follow at speeds of more than 55 mph and the motorcycle driver at one point turned around to look at the officer before turning off the road just past the flume bridge and on to a maintenance access road. The suspect drove around the left side of the gate via a narrow path and almost lost control of the motorcycle. The officer exited his vehicle and jumped over the gate anticipating that the suspect was going to lose control and stop. The suspect re-gained control and continued riding eastbound on a narrow wooded trail that parallels the flume as the officer pursued on foot. After traveling several yards on the trail, the motorcycle shut off. The officer continued through the trail in the darkness to avoid detection and then suddenly heard the motorcycle start up again as he neared its location. The motorcycle traveled for about 20 more seconds and then shut off again. As the officer navigated through the trail, he noticed the silhouette of the suspect’s white helmet sitting on the motorcycle looking around. The officer was able to approach the suspect and take him to the ground. The suspect said he was out for a ride, but had no specific destination and said he did not know why he did not stop. A search revealed a small amount of marijuana and a pipe. He was transported to Pierce County Jail and booked for eluding, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

STOLEN FIREWORKS: The owner of a fireworks stand called on state Route 410 police on July 4 to report that sometime through the night an individual stole more than $1,000 in merchandise. Police are investigating.

SHOPLIFTING: Police on July 6 were dispatched to the Walmart for a report of three juvenile females in custody for shoplifting. According to store security, the three girls were seen picking out swimsuits and then attempting to leave the store without paying for more than $115 in merchandise. One of the girls told police that her family was poor and she needed the items, but police note the girl was well-dressed, had a car and a phone and was taking items that are luxuries to most people. The girls were released to family and a report was forwarded to Remann Hall for charging.

DRUGS: Police on patrol on July 5 witnessed a vehicle on 192nd Avenue East stopped well behind the stop line and then turn without using a signal. The vehicle also had no tailgate. As the officer activated his lights, the began to quickly move around within the vehicle as it passed two entry points to a parking lot but continue at a slow speed. Officers did not think the vehicle was going to stop. During the time, the vehicle weaved around and the occupants continued to move around the cab, turning and looking directly at the officer at one point. After more than 0.25-mile the vehicle slowed and the occupants were arrested and searched. The driver was found to have outstanding warrants. Because of the furtive movements, the cab of the vehicle was checked for possible weapons and saw a glass pipe commonly used for smoking crack. A search of the driver’s purse also revealed several prescription pills. Police found multiple plastic bags containing cocaine in a hidden pocket in the purse, which she said was put there by the passenger, whom she said sells cocaine. The two were transported to Pierce County Jail. The driver was booked on charges of possession with the intent to deliver. The passenger was found to have blood pressure too high to be booked into jail.

YOU’LL TAKE AN ARREST: Police on July 12 were dispatched to Cellular World for a report of a theft in progress. Employees witnessed an individual remove an iPhone from the store and chased him down the sidewalk. According to store employees, he was looking at a phone and then said “I’ll take this one” before running off. The phone and case are valued at more than $750. An officer chased the vehicle down state Route 410 and saw the dust cloud as it turned onto a property in the 16800 block of 64th Street East. The driver denied taking the phone. Police also removed wire cutters from the suspect. As he was being transported to Pierce County Jail, the suspect told police he was addicted to Oxycodone. The driver said he dropped the phone before fleeing the store, but store employees were unable to locate the phone. He was booked for theft.

FRAUD: Police on July 11 were dispatched to take a fraud report from a resident who was contacted by his bank regarding charges made to his account from California that the card owner did not make. Police are investigating.

SHOPLIFTING: Police on July 9 were dispatched to Safeway for a report of a theft of beer. Employees witnessed the suspect leaving the store with two 12-packs of beer. Police are investigating.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: Police on July 8 were dispatched to the 9400 block of 202 Ave East for a report of an attempted burglary. According to the homeowner, she heard a banging noise coming from the back bedroom window and saw a man in dark clothes run away from the residence. The resident told police this was the second time in a month it has happened. Police are investigating.
