Creating a special night for local high school girls is the goal of Prom Dreams, a volunteer group now gearing up for its second season.

Coordinated by Judy Zumwalt and Sally Zoll – with the help of civic groups, various businesses and private donors – Prom Dreams follows the lead of similar programs already in operation. In particular, Zumwalt said, local organizers have been in touch with those who operate a successful volunteer venture in Bonney Lake.

These efforts are responsible for lining up gently-used prom gowns, shoes and accessories and making them available for girls whose families might not have the financial ability to afford an expensive prom night. Additionally, local salons get involved by styling hair, offering manicures and pedicures and applying makeup the day of the prom.

Zumwalt said Prom Dreams will even pay for the girls’ tickets.  One thing they cannot supply is transportation.

Zumwalt said the local organization is designed for senior girls at Enumclaw High. Their prom is planned for June 4. Last year, Prom Dreams was able to fund only two girls; with a year’s worth of experience, the organization is hoping to support 10 or more girls this time around.

Prom Dreams volunteers are now looking for interested girls and members of the public willing to donate items or cash.

Girls can put their names in for consideration by phoning 253-332-1504. Anyone wishing to donate to the program, whether a prom dress, shoes, accessories or cash, can take their donation to Plateau Outreach Ministries, 1806 Cole St. in Enumclaw. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Items should be labeled as a Prom Dreams donation.
