For those of you who have hiked Mount Peak and climbed the newly-constructed fire lookout tower, you may have noticed something.
Or, rather, a lack of something — a good view.
The Mount Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association, who spearheaded the tower project, is looking to fix that.
A public meeting is being held with King County Parks this Thursday, June 9, on the corner of Cole Street and Myrtle Avenue under the big tent at 6 p.m. to discuss the possibility of clearing some trees to improve the sights from the tower.
Presented at the meeting will be a tree study done as part of the lookout tower construction project, which includes photos of what the views from the lookout are now and some graphics showing what the views from the lookout could be with some level of strategic tree removal to create, said King County spokesperson Doug Williams, who works in the natural resources and parks department.
“[The lookout tower project] has been a community driven effort from the start, with significant public involvement and feedback at every step, and we will continue that model through this work,” Williams said. “We have no preconceived ideas on how this process will move forward, nor do we really have a strict timeline for completing any work. If it’s decided that some level of tree removal is preferred, we would of course need to go through a permitting process to accomplish that.”

As it stands, the view from the tower gives glimpses of Buckley and the Boise area, and extends to even Lake Tapps in Bonney Lake. With a sharp set of eyes or a strong enough camera, you can catch the huge machinery of the Port of Tacoma.
