School-age children are counting down the days - two weeks before they return to the Plateau area's public classrooms.

With school starting before the Labor Day holiday this year, there are plenty of deadlines approaching for students and their parents. Here are a list of some:

Enumclaw School District

School begins Sept. 1

Enumclaw High School

€ Enumclaw High School's annual Hornet Days are scheduled Aug. 29 and 30. The schedule is as follows: from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29 students with last names S-Z, and noon to 2:30 p.m. K-R; 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30, E-J and noon to 2:30 p.m., A-D.

Thunder Mountain Middle School

€ Thunder Mountain hosts Days of Thunder from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

Enumclaw Middle School

€ Enumclaw Middle School pre-sale and picture day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday. During this time EMS will be pre-selling physical education uniforms, Associated Student Body cards, yearbooks, athletic user fees and school pictures. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of the pre-sale days as the office will not be processing any of these items again until the first day of school.

€ A special orientation for all sixth-, seventh- or eighth-grade students new to Enumclaw Middle School will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday in the school cafeteria. Students will be introduced to the counseling and administrative staff, tour the school and have questions answered. Parents are encouraged to attend.

In the afternoon from 12:30 to 3, students will have the opportunity to purchase school pictures, yearbooks, ASB cards, PE uniforms and pay athletic user fees.

Elementary schools

€ Parents of Enumclaw School District kindergartners will receive a letter in the mail instructing them about the first day of school. The first day, Sept. 1, kindergartners will come with their parents at a scheduled time (in the letter) to meet with their teacher. Sept. 2, half the kindergarten class will attend class all day. The other half of the class will attend school Sept. 6. The entire class returns to school Sept. 7.

In the district

€ The school district's annual New Teacher Breakfast will take place at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall.

€ Most supply lists and bus routes are posted at the Enumclaw School District Web site at www.enumclaw.wednet.edu. Questions can be directed to the district office at 360-802-7102.

White River School District

School begins Sept. 1

White River High School

€ White River High School has scheduled Hornet Tip Off Thursday in the commons.

Hornet Tip-Off is a day for students to come prior to the start of the school year to purchase of school pictures, ID cards, ASB card ($25), student handbook ($5), yearbook ($45 base price), purchase physical education uniform ($18, not mandatory) and campus parking permit ($15, required if parking on campus).

It is also an opportunity to pay fees and fines, deposit funds to school lunch accounts, pick up class schedule, and turn in emergency information and fall sports eligibility papers.

Students are asked to come during the following times: 9 to 10:30 a.m., seniors; 10:30 a.m. to noon, juniors; 1 to 3 p.m., sophomores. Incoming 9th graders are asked to report to the main gymnasium for Orientation/Tip-off. Those whose last name begins with A-H should be there at 3 p.m., I-P at 4 p.m. and those who are Q-Z at 5 p.m.. Please plan to be there for about an hour. Freshman will tour the campus, receive class schedules, have photographs taken and receive ID cards. Students planning to turn out for a fall sport (cross country, football, golf, girls soccer or volleyball), are required to purchase an ASB Card and pay the athletic user fee ($40). The athletic participation packets are available in the ASB office. Football players in grades 10 through 12 must turn in their paperwork prior to today, Wednesday. Freshman football players and those participating in other sports must turn in paperwork prior to the first turnout Monday. All current fines and fees must be paid before athletes will be cleared for participation.

Glacier and White River

middle schools

€ Glacier and White River middle schools will host WEB Play Day Tuesday for incoming sixth-graders. The day is a welcome, orientation and chance to meet some returning students.

Seventh and eighth graders can pick up their schedules Monday.

Across the district

€ The district's elementary schools (except Wickersham School of Discovery) begin staffing and opening offices Thursday. The Wickersham office will open Tuesday.

€ District all-staff breakfast 7:30 a.m. Aug. 25 in high school commons.
