Are you looking for some attention?
Most people are. We have become a nation of attention junkies. We’ll do anything to get noticed. We’ll wear clothes that make us seem cheap, pull stunts that endanger us or others, and poke cruel fun at people we should help. We post pictures of ourselves designed to paint us in the most flattering light possible.
Why? Because we crave attention. Because we’re addicted to being noticed. Because we want to be worshiped.
Jesus calls us to another way. The Bible says, “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands so that your daily life will win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12). In other words, keep a low profile. Take care of your personal stuff so someone else doesn’t have to. Let your actions speak for themselves.
Our culture screams the opposite. It tells us to promote ourselves, get noticed any way we can, pay attention to our PR. But real people don’t need any PR. Real heroes don’t need (or want) a spotlight. They are comfortable pleasing God and God alone.
How about you? The terrible thing about a thirst for attention is that it will distract you from the only one who will ever satisfy your soul, and that is God himself. So let me invite you to stop trying to get noticed and start noticing him. If you do, you’ll be glad you did.
