April Schroeder, Bryan Garton and Tamarah Knapp Hancock will vie for the Enumclaw School Board seat vacated by Cathy Dahlquist.
The board opening closed Dec. 17. The three candidates were invited to an informational meeting Dec. 20 prior to the Enumclaw School Board’s regular meeting.
Dahlquist, who has served on the board for the past five years, was elected to the District 31 House of Representatives seat in November.
The board plans to evaluate the candidates at its Monday workshop and then interview them in 30-minute intervals starting at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 6 with a decision following those interviews.
The board’s selection will fill the position for one year, running on the November ballot for the unexpired term.
All three candidates have students in the district. Schroeder has been an active board member with the Sunrise Elementary School PTA and was a coordinator for the district’s sixth-grade camp effort this year.
Garton, who owns a chiropractic office in Enumclaw, has served as the chair of the community’s 4RKids levy committee.
Knapp Hancock, the former city administrator in Buckley, and is general counsel at Scarsella Bros. She has degrees in civil engineering and law.
In other business, the board:
• elected Chris VanHoof to serve as president for the coming year. Corey Cassell will fill the role of vice president, and Tim Nickson will be the board’s legislative representative.
• accepted donations of $1,000 to the Enumclaw High School library from the Class of 1959; $700 from the Salmon Homecoming Alliance to the Native American Program; $1,500 from the Enumclaw Schools Foundation for full-day kindergarten scholarships; and $1,300 from Enumclaw Band Boosters to EHS orchestra program.
