Schools collect thousands of food items for food banks

Students, staff and families throughout the Sumner School District contributed to local food banks, senior centers and the Sumner Family Center to help assist neighbors in need during this holiday season.

Students, staff and families throughout the Sumner School District contributed to local food banks, senior centers and the Sumner Family Center to help assist neighbors in need during this holiday season.

Many students shared birthday money, opened piggy banks or even hosted a bake sale to make a contribution to one of the many opportunities for giving and sharing. Staff members and parents provided holiday baskets, gifts and clothing to numerous children and families.

The following is a rundown of the food and other gifts collected by the Sumner School District this holiday season:

Central Office: Central Office staff members, sponsored the coat drive and participated in the Fill A Stocking for Sumner Family Center;

Sumner Family Center: Coordinated with schools throughout the district, other community organizations and businesses to fulfill the holiday wish lists of more than 1,000 kids;

Bonney Lake Elementary: Student council sponsored a canned food drive for the Bonney Lake Food Bank and Bonney Lake Senior Center, donating 1822 items;

Bonney Lake High School: Students participated in the annual high school Food Bowl and donated more than 12,000 items to the Bonney Lake Food Bank;

Crestwood Elementary: Student council sponsored the annual Holly Pihl Memorial Food Drive donating 25 boxes of food to the Bonney Lake Food Bank. The school also provided holiday baskets to 16 Crestwood families;

Daffodil Valley Elementary: Students collected 1,927 items for the St. Andrew pantry that provided more than 300 families with food baskets. and the school provided holiday baskets to 45 Daffodil families;

Emerald Hills Elementary: Students collected 995 pounds of food for the Bonney Lake Food Bank, and the school provided holiday baskets to 27 children attending Emerald Hills;

Liberty Ridge Elementary: Student council sponsored a 2,770 food drive to benefit students at Liberty Ridge. In partnership with local businesses, staff sponsored 45 families providing holiday dinners and other items, and provided gifts or clothes to 107 students. Students in our community-based program assisted in the collection, sorting and delivery of gifts and baskets;

Lakeridge Middle School: The parent organization provided spirit wear to 30 students in need, and students provided 12 holiday food baskets to families, in addition to providing two families with gifts, food, clothes and necessities for the holidays;

McAlder Elementary: Student Council organized a canned food drive collecting 2,471 cans for the Bread of Life Food Bank;

Maple Lawn Elementary: Students worked with the Sumner Family Center to provide holiday baskets to 10 families. Students collected 1887 items for the St. Andrew’s pantry that provided more than 300 families with food baskets;

Mountain View Middle School: Students held food drive and collected 2,300 items for the Bonney Lake Food Bank and the Bonney Lake Senior Center. The school provided holiday baskets to 70 families with their Holiday Express program;

Sumner High School: Students participated in the annual high school Food Bowl and donated more than 24,400 items to the food bank. Student clubs and organizations at Sumner High School collected and wrapped more than 300 toys and hosted the annual community dinner, serving more than 700 guests;

Sumner Middle School: Hosted its annual Great Turkey Giveaway, with 100 students winning a turkey to take home, and provided holiday baskets to 35 families;

Victor Falls Elementary: Students hosted a food drive for the Bonney Lake Food Bank, and the school provided holiday baskets to 10 families.
