Sumner is the new home of Service Paper Company, which is a distribution center providing paper products to the food service industry and others.
Tom Richards, general operations manager, said Service Paper Company began looking for a new location last summer and searched for a new location in Fife, Auburn and decided on the location in Sumner.
The distribution center makes its move after 30 years in Renton, during which time it was housed in two separate buildings.
“We wanted to get it under one roof,” he said.
Richards said it was important to have a large building with high ceilings, allowing products to be stacked high.
“Sumner has got a lot of options in that respect,” he said.
“We are operating 24 hours day five days a week,” Richards said.
There are 150 people employed at the location.
“Every employee that we had in Renton has agreed to work in Sumner,” Richards said.
Most are pleased with the move, Richards said, since most of the employees now live closer to work.
This isn’t the only benefit of moving.
“Operationally the big hcange is we’re going to be a lot more efficient,” he said.
The company currently occupies 175,000 square feet of a 250,000 square feet.
Service Paper Company began in 1937 and distributed bundles of bags to the merchants in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. The distribution center in Sumner has the original hand-truck the owner delivered the bags with.
The business is located at 4501 West Valley Highway East Ste A.
