Sixteen Plateau-area teachers, eight each from the Enumclaw and White River school districts, recently earned National Board Certification.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction recently made the announcement.

Jane Krohn, Doug Wolff, Oressa Phelps, Mark Hanson, Will Osborn, Kim Taylor, Kris Hughes and Tara Myers join 27 Enumclaw teachers who have already passed the process.

According to Superintendent Mike Nelson, this growing group of 35 now represents just more than 14 percent of the certificated staff in the Enumclaw School District, well above the posted state average of 5 percent on the OSPI website.

The White River School Board honored its eight teachers during a recent board meeting. Jessy Hubbell, Cheryl Newman, Sarah Hintz, Denise Shaleen, Amanda Burbank, Barb Melvin, Shannon Hasiak and Jason Wenham will join the district’s 15 other national board teachers.

“This is the largest group we’ve had accomplish this feat,” Superintendent Tom Lockyer said. “We’re tickled pink.”

The teachers thanked the district and board for its financial support, as well as its time and leadership.

District administrators are creating a “wall of fame” in the district to honor its National Board Certified teachers.

NBC is a voluntary assessment program designed to identify, recognize and reward teachers who meet standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.

All candidates receive a $5,000 bonus each year.
