In another sign that summer is on the way, the Snack Shack at Allan Yorke Park is scheduled to open Saturday.

Despite the cooler temperatures, Stew Bowen of the Bonney Lake food bank was at the Shack Wednesday, getting it ready for the big opening.

This is the fourth year the food bank has run the Snack Shack.

According to Bowen, prices at the Shack will stay the same as last year on favorites such as hot dogs, Slush Puppies, nachos, soda, pretzels, candy and water and all profits will go to support the Bonney Lake Food Bank.

Also like last year, water will be available for 25 cents with free refills available all day. Bowen said the cost was to prevent people from using multiple cups and leaving the litter laying around.

According to Bowen, the Shack accounts for a large percentage of the Food Bank’s budgeted revenues for the year.

“Last year, probably 20 percent of our budget came through here,” he said. “This year we’re hoping to do better.”

Bowen said Shack will be open every day from May 1 to Sept 4, as stipulated in the contract with the city, which was approved by the City Council April 13.

At the meeting, Mayor Neil Johnson credited the Food Bank for “saving” the concession stand at a time when it was on the chopping block.

“It’s definitely been a lot better for the city,” he said of having the Food Bank manage the stand.

Bowen said the Snack Shack would be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day through the season, except days of extreme weather.

“When it’s really, really bad we’re not here,” he said, explaining that during torrential rainstorms, there is generally no one at the park anyway.

The Bonney Lake Food Bank will also be hosing a Food Drive Sunday at the Snack Shack.
