In another sign that summer is on the way, the Snack Shack at Allan Yorke Park opened for business Saturday.
Despite the cooler temperatures, Stew Bowen of the Bonney Lake Food Bank was at the Shack April 28, getting it ready for the big opening.
This is the fourth year the food bank has run the Snack Shack.
According to Bowen, prices will stay the same as last year for favorites like hot dogs, Slush Puppies, nachos, soda, pretzels, candy and water and all profits will go to support the Bonney Lake Food Bank.
Also like last year, water will be available for 25 cents with free refills available all day. Bowen said the cost was to prevent people from using multiple cups and leaving the litter laying around.
According to Bowen, the Snack Shack accounts for a large percentage of the food bank’s budgeted revenue for the year.
“Last year, probably 20 percent of our budget came through here,” he said. “This year we’re hoping to do better.”
Bowen said the Snack Shack will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Sept. 4, as stipulated in a contract approved by the City Council April 13.
At the meeting, Mayor Neil Johnson credited the Food Bank for “saving” the concession stand at a time when it was on the chopping block.
“It’s definitely been a lot better for the city,” Johnson said of having the food bank manage the stand.
Bowen said the Snack Shack would be open every day through the season, except during times of extreme weather conditions.
“When it’s really, really bad we’re not here,” he said, explaining that during torrential rainstorms, there is generally no one at the park anyway.
