A snowy winter didn’t stop crews from plowing through State Route 410 over Chinook Pass and reopening the highway a week ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Chinook Pass will reopen Tuesday morning, May 17, on the east side at Morse Creek, 5 miles east of the summit and on the west side at the intersection of State Route 123 and SR 410. The Washington State Department of Transportation and the National Park Service have been working to reopen the pass since the beginning of April.

Chinook Pass receives snowfall on par with two of the snowiest spots in our state; Paradise on Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker. Based on snowpack totals this year, Chinook Pass received more snow than either location with 189 inches in mid-April.

Other seasonal road openings have begun throughout Mount Rainier National Park:

• The Westside Road is open to Dry Creek with washouts beyond Dry Creek.
• Stevens Canyon Road is open from the west beyond Reflection Lakes to the Snow Lake trailhead and from the east to Grove of the Patriarchs.
• The remainder of the Stevens Canyon Road is scheduled to open to through traffic on May 27.
• Sunrise and Mowich Lake roads are scheduled to open on July 1.
• Cayuse Pass reopened on April 29.
