A standoff between police and an armed woman ended at 7:05 p.m. Thursday when the suspect raised a weapon toward a SWAT officer searching the house. The deputy fired at last once and the 43-year-old female suspect was injured. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The deputy is 42 years old and has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years.

The incident began about 1:50 Thursday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies were called by neighbor to a house in the 37300 block of 244th Ave S.E. The woman who lived in the house was breaking out windows. According to the neighbor the woman and her husband were having marital difficulties.

Sheriff deputies arrived and tried talking to the woman but she retreated to a back bedroom and fired off a shot from a shotgun. At this point it is unclear if she was actually shooting at the deputies. No one else was home but there were several weapons in the residence in addition to the shotgun.

The Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and negotiators were called out and tried to talk to the woman all afternoon. When she didn’t answer her cell phone, a “throw phone” was tossed into the house but the woman would not answer it. At 5 p.m. deputies deployed a robot to search the house and communicate with the woman via the robot. However she could not be found.

At about 6:30 p.m. SWAT deputies began searching the house. They could not locate the woman. Just after 7 p.m. a deputy dropped down into the crawl space of the house and was confronted by the woman holding a shotgun. Despite several commands to drop the weapon, the deputy fired and the woman was hit at least once. She was taken by fire department personnel to a nearby area and life-flighted to Harborview.

The shooting will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office Shooting Review Board.
