Winds gusted to 60 mph in south King County, creating dangerous conditions for crews and causing additional power outages throughout the night. As of 4 a.m. on Wednesday, crews had restored power to more than 135,800 Puget Sound Energy customers, but high winds outpaced restoration efforts. At this time, approximately 60,000 PSE customers are without power.
We currently have substantial transmission damage in South King, impacting large numbers of customers. These lines will be our top priority this morning. We have 30 new crews from outside the region joining our restoration efforts this morning.
With the ongoing high winds, some customers are experiencing repeated outages as we restore power only to have it knocked out again by falling limbs and trees. Outages have been concentrated in South King County including Auburn, Black Diamond, Burien, Des Moines, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Kent, Maple Valley, Pacific, SeaTac, Ravensdale and Vashon Island. In Pierce County, areas impacted include Buckley, Edgewood, Lake Tapps, Pacific and Puyallup.
Most customers will be restored today and into Thursday. However, due to the worsening conditions overnight, PSE crews now estimate that the last group of customers without power in south King County could be restored as late as noon on Friday. Those estimates could change if high winds and unsafe conditions persist.
Due to the unusually cold temperatures, PSE encourages customers without power to be prepared for their safety and comfort. If using portable heaters, keep them away from furniture, draperies and other flammable materials. Never use a natural gas range for heating or charcoal as an indoor heating or cooking source.
