The Enumclaw School Board could include an Enumclaw High School student in the near future.

The board took the first steps toward creating a non-voting advisory board position at its meeting Jan. 19.

According to Superintendent Mike Nelson, the Riverview School District has a similar policy and have enjoyed the view the students bring to the board. Nelson said student representatives would participate in board discussion, but will not have the right to make motions, vote, hold board offices or attend exectuive sessions.

Students would be a junior, who would serve a two-year term, and a senior to be selected in the spring.

“I support this policy 100 percent,” Nelson said. “I just think it’s a great thing to do.”

In other business, the board:

• opened the meeting with a moment of silence to remember Kibler Elementary School students Jared and Jordan Davis who were killed in a car accident.

• was honored by Nelson as part of School Board Appreciation Month. The board was presented with a small gift and Nelson said he appreciated the time they put into their positions, their gracious open hearts and love for kids.

• noted its next board workshop is 6:30 p.m. Monday and the next regular meeting is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22.

• recognized teachers JoAnn Amberg, Tiffany Armstrong, Matt Hicks, Bob Kilmer, Kamele Kimball, Kim Patrick, Susan Sandfer and Barb Schreiner for earning National Board Certification.

• accepted a $3,600 donation from the Westwood Elementary School PTA to purchase three document cameras for Westwood.

• heard from board member Cathy Dahlquist who said she was recently in Olympia talking to legislators about impact fees. She said Enumlcaw is currently only collecting impact fees in unicorporated King County and it’s at a discounted rate.

• heard from board member Tim Nickson, who will be part of trust lands task force.
