Some people think of summer as a time to get away and relax. Here in Sumner things start to heat up with so many activities that sometimes I just get tired thinking about them. Just this past week, we:
celebrated all things rhubarb with Rhubarb Days;
cheered on the Seattle-to-Portland riders as they came through Sumner;
enjoyed our own great soccer with the Sounders U-23 playing here on their home field (with another rhubarb pie-eating contest);
danced to the tunes of Neil Diamond with Music Off Main’s the Diamond Experience;
traveled together to visit our friends in La Conner on a Senior Center trip;
gathered at the Sounder Station to take the train to the Mariners game;
partnered together to host a golf tournament to raise money for the Sumner Relay for Life.
That’s quite a list! I’m probably even missing something, given the great programs at the library and other camps, classes and workshops going on throughout our city. It also doesn’t count the reunions and picnics in our parks, the people enjoying our new trails, and all the weddings in our churches and halls.
Cities have a heartbeat, almost similar to the human body. You can tell when a city is thriving when people care enough to celebrate and gather here. This indicator also tends to make people feel more safe in this community and leads to active, thriving businesses. If this week is any indication, I’d say that Sumner is going strong!
