The City of Sumner is preparing its biennial budget for 2011 and 2012.
Beth Ann Wroe, the city financial operations director, said there are two significant changes in the new budget.
“Probably one of the most significant changes is that we built the budget no longer providing 911 communication services,” Wroe said.
At a Sept. 27 study session council discussed the future of 911 communications in the area, which, upon approval from council will have emergency calls sent through the Puyallup communications center.
Wroe said general fund expenditures are 12 percent less than the budget amount in 2009-2010, which means the city needs to be more austere in the future.
“We have less resources to provide,” she said.
To maintain a level of commitment to the citizens and stay within budget, the city is keeping some positions open.
“We’re keeping our current positions that are vacant,” Wroe said.
Wroe said two people are retiring during the 2011-2012 years and one of the positions will remain unfilled.
