SUMNER: City Council swears in mayor and council at first meeting of new year

At the first Sumner City Council meeting of the new year, several items were accomplished in the course of an hour, including the swearing in of the winners of the 2009 elections.

At the first Sumner City Council meeting of the new year, several items were accomplished in the course of an hour, including the swearing in of the winners of the 2009 elections.

Council members Randy Hynek, Ed Hannus and Steve Allsop were sworn in to their positions and were followed by Mayor Dave Enslow, who is continuing.

The election of deputy mayor was next on the agenda and Councilmember Leroy Goff nominated Allsop an Hannus seconded the nomination. Hynek nominated Hannus, but when Hannus declined the nomination, Hynek nominated Councilmember Matt Richardson.

The matter was put to a vote and Allsop was elected to his second consecutive term as deputy mayor by a vote of 5-2.

Moving through the agenda, council appointed assigned members of the council to committees for finance and personnel, public works, public safety, and community development and parks.

The finance and personnel committee is joined by Councilmember Curt Brown, Goff and Richardson. Hynek is the alternate representative.

The public safety committee’s appointees are Goff, Brown, Hannus, with Allsop stepping in as the alternate.

On the public works committee are Hannus, Hochstatter and Allsop, with Goff serving as the alternate.

Allsop, Richardson and Hynek are the appointees to the community development and parks committee, with Hochstatter as the alternate.

The Pierce County Regional Council (PCRC) appointment came next. Richardson served as the Sumner representative on the PCRC and Enslow thanked him at the meeting for his dedication and service.

“There were several items that he was key in,” Enslow said.

Allsop was chosen as the council’s representative on the PCRC and Richardson and Councilmember Cindi Hochstatter are alternates.

The Rainier Communications Commission Representative was selected next. Hannus volunteered for the position, nominating himself and Richardson seconded the nomination. Hannus was unanimously appointed to the position.

The council appointed Mark Hamilton from the city of Bonney Lake as the Zoo Trek Authority Board representative at the recommendation of Richardson.

The Zoo Trek Authority Board is designed to represent Pierce County sales tax for the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. The authority board receives 50 percent of the one-tenth of one cent sales tax and oversees the share. The authority board reviews the business plans of the zoo and the wildlife park and makes recommendations to the authority board budget based on the assessments.
