Sumner considering charging for events

Effects of the failing economy are being felt in small towns throughout the country and Sumner, no exception, is considering ways to recover some costs of special events in town.

Effects of the failing economy are being felt in small towns throughout the country and Sumner, no exception, is considering ways to recover some costs of special events in town.

At a March 9 study session, City Administrator John Doan presented to council for consideration a proposal to charge hosts approximately half the cost of special events.

One source of money would possibly be from facility rental fees, but if no staff time is needed to hold the event, no charge will be applied. Events requiring staff time to set up, but do not require police would be categorized as mini-events and would be assessed a fee of $250.

Larger events which require police and involve street closures would be assessed a fee of half the cost of the event. The city may also adjust the cost of installing banners across streets for events.

Councilmember Randy Hynek suggested creating a cost-effective way of installing banners rather than continuing to charge organizations.

Council is discussing this matter further.
